1977: First ComputerLand franchise store was opened
ComputerLand is one of the first chain of stores to sell computers across USA. It was started by William H. Millard in 1976 and it was today (18th February 1977) that the first franchise store of ComputerLand was opened.
This is important as it is the starting of the large extend of ComputerLand and its impact on making computing more accessible to the daily user. It was the first store to sell IBM personal computers.
The first franchise was named Computer Shack which was later renamed to ComputerLand. Its location was South Street in Morristown, New Jersey, USA.
Unfortunately, ComputerLand ceased operations in 2000 but its impact is undisputed.
1745: Alessandro Volta was born (Voltaic pile)
Alessandro Volta was born today (18th February 1745) and is most popularly known for:
- Inventing Electric Battery
- Discovering methane
Electric Battery is a center component of any computing device and hence, the contribution of Alessandro Volta is significant. The first electric battery by Volta was named Voltaic pile. This is strongly influential as it was strongly believed that electricity is generated only within living beings and cannot be generated using chemical process. Volta proved it wrong by inventing an electric battery and this drove the human progress greatly.
As an honor, the SI unit of electric potential is named after him (Volt). He passed away on 5th March 1827.
